Just Another Day On The Calendar . . .

I don’t really subscribe to Valentine’s Day, even when I have been coupled up on the day. I just feel like it is a day that puts a lot of undue pressure on everyone. If you are in an established relationship, there is the push to woo and wow, and possibly try to out-do the year before. If you are only in new relationship, there is always the question of should we celebrate or shouldn’t we?

If you are single, it is a constant reminder of something you don’t have in your life, whether you are looking for it or not. There is also such an anticipation that builds up expectations; sometimes expectations that are too high to achieve and that can only lead to disappointment and let down. If you love someone, you don’t need a special day or a big fancy, expensive gift to show it. You shouldn’t only show appreciation for someone you love because the calendar tells you to.

I have always been a fan of the small gestures that mean the most. I think many people are surprised at how low maintenance I can be when it comes to gifts. I think it truly is the thought that counts more than a price tag. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, I have a decent car, I own most of what I need, so when it comes to trying to impress me with a gift, it is best to go for the sentimental. Here is a list of some of the gifts that I have received that meant the most to me:

  1. A Pair of Sweatpants. This was from a boyfriend and they were his sweatpants (so yes, they were worn). We were in college at different schools and they were red and said his school name on them in big, white letters down the one leg. They weren’t fashionable, but they were so comfy and I would wear them whenever I would go visit him at his school. I know they were one of his favorites too, so when he eventually let me have them, I was truly touched. They reminded me of him and I wore them often, long after we broke up even.
  2. A Mix Tape. Yes, I grew up in the times of mix tapes. And I was always lucky to have some great friends and boyfriends who made AWESOME mix tapes. One was from a boyfriend and consisted just of songs he would listen to and reminded him of me, and he wrote an explanation out for each one. Another was from one of my best friends. We would all hang out at a local spot every Sunday night and certain songs were always playing. He didn’t write what songs were on the cassette, but rather a list with a clue for me to guess what was on it. So much fun!
  3. Tickets to a Concert. Now, this wasn’t the least expensive of gifts, but it was to see a band that my friend didn’t really care about, but she still went with me and got them for me because she knew that I would love it and had been trying to see them forever.

If you are shopping for me this year, I do happen to use the Cash App – $SIBSally. But honestly, I really could just use continued support while I am in this tough transition in life. Hope you all survive this Hallmark holiday in one piece and are able to celebrate what is most important – that, single or coupled, we have all made it through yet another year to see this day pass once again.
